Interesting read from the former head of trust at Twitter. It raises the question: if Twitter can’t moderate hate speech, could it run afoul of some other tech titans?
“Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services.”

I wrote something for CJR about the recent influx of journalists (including me) joining Mastodon, and some of the culture shock that has emerged as a result https://www.cjr.org/analysis/journalists-want-to-recreate-twitter-on-mastodon-mastodon-is-not-into-it.php
RIP toots. No more jokes about elephant flatulence on Mastodon. https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/mastodon-to-replace-terminology-of-toots-and-status-with-post/1627
Andy Serkis’ speech in episode 10 of “Star Wars: Andor” wasn’t just one of the best speeches ever made in “Star Wars”; it’s also an applicable message to Twitter’s remaining employees: ONE! WAY! OUT!
This is such an interesting conversation to me. It's drilled into journalists to "report the news, not *be* the news." But at a time when trust is plummeting, many people don't really understand what we do or consider us elites, I wonder if being more personal helps bridge the perceived gap between us and readers. For better or worse, we're just people. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/13/reader-center/getting-personal-with-millions-of-readers.html?smtyp=cur&smid=fb-nytimes&fbclid=IwAR3a-gswxD4KLzIOueKwjjzNU-_JHejGPeG7vHlRvDv8YbBH0xJDsOM4qz4
Decided to look at network stats again. There are 1M more people using #Mastodon today than there were on October 27.
@ryanlowery I’m wondering if local news outlets could set up instances for subscribers to access Mastodon or future decentralized social media sites (create a media mastodon that restricts access to paywalled content to subscribers). They’d provide a trusted content moderation / news aggregation algorithm, local conversations, access to journalists. They could bundle paid from other outlets doing the same.
This is a picture of a blanket of 8000 crocheted poppies by Sheila’s Lee Restall inside the Manitoba Legislature. A wonderful work of remembrance. #RemembranceDay
My article on the recent surge of interest in Mastodon is now out. https://theconversation.com/people-are-leaving-twitter-for-mastodon-but-are-they-ready-for-democratic-social-media-194220
The latest post by @jeffjarvis explores a lot of ideas I've been having about future applications of Mastodon. My goal in the next few weeks is to set up a server for the journalism students I teach so we can collectively explore how media outlets might go about hosting conversations about the local content they produce.

@ggow I’m glad I’m not the only person who revisited this site given recent Elon developments.
While I thank the great folks at UAlberta for getting me started on Mastodon, I'm now running my own server and can be found at: mikewise@social.humbernews.ca
