Interesting read from the former head of trust at Twitter. It raises the question: if Twitter can’t moderate hate speech, could it run afoul of some other tech titans?

“Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services.”

I wrote something for CJR about the recent influx of journalists (including me) joining Mastodon, and some of the culture shock that has emerged as a result cjr.org/analysis/journalists-w

Andy Serkis’ speech in episode 10 of “Star Wars: Andor” wasn’t just one of the best speeches ever made in “Star Wars”; it’s also an applicable message to Twitter’s remaining employees: ONE! WAY! OUT!

This is such an interesting conversation to me. It's drilled into journalists to "report the news, not *be* the news." But at a time when trust is plummeting, many people don't really understand what we do or consider us elites, I wonder if being more personal helps bridge the perceived gap between us and readers. For better or worse, we're just people. nytimes.com/2022/11/13/reader-

Decided to look at network stats again. There are 1M more people using #Mastodon today than there were on October 27.

All this feels a little like dialing into different local BBS's on our Commodonre 64 way back.

The latest post by @jeffjarvis explores a lot of ideas I've been having about future applications of Mastodon. My goal in the next few weeks is to set up a server for the journalism students I teach so we can collectively explore how media outlets might go about hosting conversations about the local content they produce.

While I gear up for Tuesday’s lunar eclipse, here’s a recent photo of the Orion Nebula (I have much to learn about post-processing my astrophotography).

Keeping with pictures of Orion, for comparison sake I compared my view from Toronto (Bortle 8-9) with a spot just outside Huntsville, Ontario (Bortle 3). Same smartphone camera: Pixel 4 Astrophotography mode.

Hello Mastodon. Clear skies in Toronto last night so I took a picture of Orion and its nebula. This is from my backyard, steps from a 12 lane highway (so, poor seeing conditions).

This is an instance of Mastodon at the University of Alberta. We are using this instance mainly for testing, but we welcome those who want to learn more about open source social media.
