@jjk99 thanks, you as well!
@jjk99 Thanks! π It was nice to be in yet another class with you. Also, I really enjoyed working on this project with y'all! Everybody had such good ideas to share.
@rochehid @keltyn @jjk99 @dorisweetie gonna be honest, I handed in the paper earlier today. I was tired of working on it and just wanted to be done π but based on that, I think we've covered our bases for the most part. I filled in some of the gaps based on earlier conversations we had about Mastodon & communing #mst210
@jjk99 @rochehid Jenny makes a great point about reducing bias. Perhaps the moderators could be the club founders like Ana suggested, but they have equal voting power? So the extra support is available to start conversations about making changes and help resolve more complicated interpersonal issues, but otherwise, everyone has equal footing. #mst210
#mst210 just re-read the mastodon guide book & realized we could totally each make a custom "list" timeline of our classmates, which might make things a bit easier to locate toots that don't have the hashtag. I think it still only features public noots tho...
#mst210 how do we want to go about addressing policy changes and administering 'strikes' for breaching guidelines? Someone mentioned earlier that these types of things should be decided by "democracy" of sorts, and I definitely agree since it's a community. Do we want to have some select people as "moderators" who can facilitate community resolutions? Or do we want more of an equality-based approach where every person is in charge of addressing problematic behaviour they come across?
@rochehid @dorisweetie sorry I'm unsure how that differs from what Doris is talking about? Do you mind explaining? Because Mastodon is not commercialized, it doesn't profit from ad revenues and such. As it is decentralized, the owner of each instance has to set up their own domain to host the instance on. Domains cost money and the rates vary significantly depending on your membership numbers, server type, etc. So instead of Mastodon being responsible for operating fees, users are. #mst210
@dorisweetie I don't really know what you mean. But yes the costs are certainly an important factor. As a club, would we ask for membership fees? Or maybe we would need some sort of fundraiser #mst210
@dorisweetie I think another thing we could do along the lines of the "forbidden word list" is content that is allowed but must be flagged using the content warning system. Cause photographs of non-illegal but potentially upsetting things should be censored so that people have the choice to engage with it or not. #mst210
@dorisweetie yeah, that seems like a good idea. And if they are a "repeat offender" I think there's a way to remove them from the instance altogether. What sort of words would be forbidden (aside from slurs obvi)? #mst210
@dorisweetie I totally agree! My thinking was maybe if we have a strike system of some sort? Like there are obvious things that should result in expulsion (i.e. illegal content, hate speech, etc.). But for things like interpersonal conflict, rude messages, spam, etc. maybe if we focussed on mediation & community resolution? It could be conducted using the private direct message system by just tagging the affected parties to mediate a discussion #mst210
@jjk99 I found it but it looks like it is very empty. Probably part of the whole reason for the assignment haha... we have no federations and no rules
@jjk99 Maybe... honestly I don't know how to view our instance itself. I guess I will work on that rn
@jjk99 lol case in point about the delete + re-draft thing, I just did that for the post you replied to because I realized unlisted makes it so it doesn't appear in any timelines, I thought it just made it for your federation. Now it made everything out of order
@jjk99 do you have any ideas re: privacy? I think it's probably an important aspect because it's specifically mentioned in the assignment brief. Honestly, I don't know how we can customize an instance in regard to data collection, etc.
@jjk99 yeah, I noticed that too. I'm not sure how I feel about it because then the time stamp is different. But it is nice that it re-enters your new post at the top of the feed unlike edited ones.
@jjk99 yes that's an important one! Cause often people aren't looking for constructive criticism, sometimes they just want to share cool photos.
so #mst210, how would we like to decide on some guidelines? I think I will brainstorm some ideas today and post a picture of what I come up with? if we all make some suggestions, then we can discuss what would make the most sense.
One community rule I think we should definitely consider is in regards to "ownership" of the photos (i.e. who has the right to use/distribute photos submitted to the exhibition). And the more obvious rules about having mutual respect between club members.
