@robertwgehl I'd like to be able to understand the federation concept well enough to explain it to students as a fundamental techno-social affordance. It seems important in the context of the rhizomatic scaling of ASM instances. Perhaps we can set this as a challenge for ourselves to write up a short article on federation. Would you be up for that?

@robertwgehl I'll neeed to wade into that discuss. I'm trying to picture the federated structure in my mind. Managing the extent of federated instances will be something of concern for community groups that might be considering ASM.

This is interesting: I followed 3 accounts on 3 other Masto servers. @robertwgehl federated with us. Now the federated list shows 100 instances connected with us. Most of them with a single user. The masotodon.social shows 23 users, when I only followed one on that instance. Clearly, this federation thing is more complicated than I thought. #insights

@Okilany hashtag search seems to work for local posts but not federated posts. try searching #music for instance.

@robertwgehl so, I followed Eugen on mastodon.social. How did these other users from that domain get on our instance?

It looks like posts from @cbcworld@botsin.space are designated as "unlisted" (the lock icon in the post. a globe icon means "public"). This means they are visible to followers only and not in public timelines. (I think).

@robertwgehl so I wonder what moderation tools admin has if a user on this instance federates with a problem instance elsewhere?
