This is interesting: I followed 3 accounts on 3 other Masto servers. @robertwgehl federated with us. Now the federated list shows 100 instances connected with us. Most of them with a single user. The masotodon.social shows 23 users, when I only followed one on that instance. Clearly, this federation thing is more complicated than I thought.

@robertwgehl so, I followed Eugen on mastodon.social. How did these other users from that domain get on our instance?

It looks like posts from @cbcworld@botsin.space are designated as "unlisted" (the lock icon in the post. a globe icon means "public"). This means they are visible to followers only and not in public timelines. (I think).

@robertwgehl so I wonder what moderation tools admin has if a user on this instance federates with a problem instance elsewhere?

We are now federated! This is done by following a user on another Masto instance. A quick how to video is here: drive.google.com/file/d/1rATUi

testing the filter. I'm going filter toots with the word "filter"

discourse.joinmastodon.org/ is the discussion board for Mastodon software stuff. Tech-heavy but may be useful for some queries.

it is possible to download an archive of your toots and media in ActivityPub format.

mastodon has a hashtag feature that lets you choose them for your profile while suggesting previously used hashtags. Tag your toots with when you're sharing any discoveries or observations!

This is an instance of Mastodon at the University of Alberta. We are using this instance mainly for testing, but we welcome those who want to learn more about open source social media.
